12:00 pm

The UM Ethics Programs hosts the latest in its 19th Annual Dialogues in Research Ethics series. Mathew S. Goodwin, director of clinical research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab and associate director of research at the Groden Center, will present “The Challenge of Autism Spectrum Disorders: Research, Practice and Technology” on Friday, January 28 at 12 p.m. in the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building, fourth-floor auditorium. Please bring your lunch. RSVP not required.

Overview
A number of innovative technologies are being developed to enhance and accelerate research and practice in autism spectrum disorders. These technologies include wireless wearable physiological and physical activity sensors, computer vision algorithms for automating facial expression detection, and ultradense video and audio capture systems for longitudinal monitoring of behavior and development in the home. These technologies raise interesting and important issues of security, privacy, and confidentiality as they relate to real-world monitoring of environment, behavior, and biology.

Goodwin serves on the executive board of the International Society for Autism Research, is co-chair of the Autism Speaks Innovative Technology for Autism Initiative, and has an adjunct associate research scientist appointment in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University.
