’Canes Care for ’Canes to Hold Special Kick-Off Event

’Canes Care for ’Canes, a campus-wide initiative aimed at promoting the ideal of a caring community and identifying resources that are available to assist students in need, will roll out phase II of its program during a special kick-off event on Tuesday, February 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the University Center Rock.

The event will include comments from prominent leaders in the UM community, informational tables staffed by representatives from various UM departments, music, promotional items, and opportunities for students to get involved in the initiative.

Spearheaded by the Division of Student Affairs, ’Canes Care for ’Canes launched its first phase during New Student Orientation Week last fall, introducing the UM community to the project with a campus-wide visual campaign that included posters, palm cards, and banners. Phase two includes an interactive website, programs and events, and the anonymous reporting form.

The initiative promotes a caring community among students, faculty, and staff through active and passive programming and outreach. Its mission also includes:

  • engaging students and encouraging them to be active participants, not bystanders, in the lives of their classmates and friends (for example, paying attention to and speaking up on behalf of students who need assistance);
  • providing a listing of campus-based and community resources that are available to assist and support students in their academic and interpersonal lives;
  • and reaching out to students, self-identified or identified by others, and providing the appropriate referrals and resources to address concerns.
