Nursing School at UM Best in Florida for NIH Funding

The University of Miami’s School of Nursing and Health Studies is now listed among the top schools of nursing for funding received from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), coming in at No. 20 in the nation and No. 1 in Florida.

The NIH is the largest source of funding for medical research in the world, creating hundreds of thousands of high-quality jobs by funding thousands of scientists at universities and research institutions around the world.

School of Nursing and Health Studies Dean Nilda “Nena” Peragallo called it wonderful news for the school, “especially for our faculty members who have worked very hard to identify and request grant funding from the NIH.”

“These grants are critical to current and future research projects,” she said. “These grants allow the school to continue to raise academic standards and put even more focus into nursing and health studies research. The research we are performing today is making a difference and will play an integral role in improving the health care of tomorrow.”

More than 80 percent of the NIH’s funding is awarded through almost 50,000 competitive grants to more than 325,000 researchers at over 3,000 universities, medical schools, and other research institutions.

“We greatly appreciate and value our long standing relationship with the NIH and look forward to the NIH’s continued support and grants as we move forward in our mission of educating the next generation of health care clinicians and scientists around the globe,” Peragallo said.
