UM’s Center for Latin American Studies to Co-Host Panel on the China and Latin America Connection

The University of Miami’s Center for Latin American Studies, in collaboration with Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Center for Latin American and Caribbean Initiatives, MDC’s Confucius Institute, and the Office of Student Life at the MDC North Campus, will host a panel discussion on the growing importance of the China-Latin American connection in regards to economics, culture, history, and policy. The event will take place on Thursday, July 14 at 12:30 p.m. in Room A102 at MDC’s North Campus, 11380 NW 27th Avenue, Miami.

Speakers will include Professor Ariel Armony, director of UM’s Center for Latin American Studies; and Professor Daniel Suman from the University of Miami. Other speakers will include Professor Gonzalo Paz, of George Washington University; MDC North Campus Professor Theodore Syder; Carlos Barrezueta, director of MDC’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Initiatives; and Professor Jim Yu, director of MDC’s Confucius Institute, who will moderate the panel.

The panelists will discuss the economic links between China and Latin America, including trade policy, energy collaboration, and capital investments. They will assess cultural similarities and differences between the regions and review historical and cultural ties, including the influence resulting from Chinese immigration to Latin America. The experts will also analyze issues of policy between the two regions, including matters of diplomacy and foreign policy, as well as examine mechanisms to increase institutional cooperation at the maritime and environmental level between the two regions.
