Women’s Health Is Important to Us All

Did you know that more than half of University of Miami faculty and staff are women? For the sake of these women and all the women in our lives, we need to make sure they’re taking care of themselves.

Women’s health is never business as usual—we have different needs that evolve as we mature. Certain health screenings should be scheduled like clockwork every year. Simple. But ask your female coworkers if they’ve had their annual checkups within the last year, and you’ll hear lots of excuses—from “I don’t have the time” to “I feel fine.”

I get it. We are all busy. We have a lot on our plate. For those of us who are also caretakers, often sandwiched in between multiple generations, we tend to take care of everyone else first. We put our own health needs last. Or worse, we postpone them to that future “someday” we never seem to get around to.

This is a sure formula for increased stress from our personal life to job productivity. Work and life balance are extremely important. Our well-being, as well as that of our families, depends on our being physically and emotionally healthy.

When U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius visited Miami last month, I joined her at a news conference on women’s health. She stressed the importance of preventive services and health screenings for women. The good news is that as members of the University community, we have access to the best care at UHealth.

  • Members of the UM medical plan have free annual preventive care benefits, including annual checkups and mammograms, and access to excellent family care and health management services.
  • Now both the Coral Gables and Miller School campuses offer Healthy ’Canes Employee Clinics which provide walk-in care for common illnesses and minor injuries.
  • The Faculty and Staff Employee Assistance Program (FSAP) offers consultation and assistance to employees and families coping with many types of issues.
  • Our state-of-the art Wellness Centers on the Coral Gables and Miller School campuses help promote healthier lifestyles through exercise, diet, and enriching activities like meditation and dancing.

There are many services available to you and your families. Take a moment and call UHealth Connect, the appointment line available exclusively to you as a UM employee and your family, at 305-243-CARE (2273).

If you have any questions, just email our Benefits Department representatives any time at www.miami.edu/benefits/ask.

Most people get preventive services at about half the recommended rate. Let’s lead by example—schedule your preventive care today for a healthier you.
