The University of Miami College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Art and Art History celebrated the grand opening of the new Studio Arts Complex on March 29 with sweet treats, music, a glass-blowing demonstration, and the dedication of the building’s Conni Gordon Painting Studio. Students, faculty, and several UM arts patrons enjoyed gourmet ice cream sandwiches, cotton candy, and popcorn as they toured the new facility, which houses painting, sculpture, and glass courses.

Leonidas Bachas, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, praised the Department of Art and Art History’s dedication to students and the arts at UM, citing a decade-long effort to establish a common facility for studio arts courses. A champagne toast marked the dedication of the painting studio, which is named in recognition of famed art educator and entertainer Conni Gordon’s gift to the department. Gordon, whose nearly 70-year career in television and publishing has earned her the title of “World’s Most Prolific Art Teacher” from The Guinness Book of World Records, was excited to support UM’s young artists, saying, “We are thrilled that students will now have this space to learn and master their art.”
