The University of Miami Ethics Programs are accepting proposals for the eighth annual Arsht Research on Ethics and Community Grants program until 11 p.m. on Monday, May 19. Proposals must be emailed as an attachment to [email protected].

Under the auspices of the Arsht Ethics Initiatives and made possible by generous gifts from UM Trustee Adrienne Arsht, the program has emerged as a fixture of interdisciplinary intellectual life at UM. Since their inception, the Ethics Programs have funded more than 50 projects and awarded more than $1 million for research that addresses contemporary ethical issues and has implications for public policy, professional practice, human rights, and other areas.

Arsht Research on Ethics and Community Grants are awarded to faculty-student teams. Any full-time UM faculty member or rising (i.e., prior to year of graduation) fulltime student (graduate or undergraduate) may apply for a grant. A faculty applicant must identify at least one student collaborator; a student applicant must identify at least one faculty mentor. Strong preference will be given to inter- and multi-disciplinary projects. An impartial Ethics Advisory Board reviews and scores all proposals, on analogy with NSF or NIH study sections.

The 2015 call for proposals is available at http://www.miami.edu/index.php/ethics/projects/arsht_research_on_ethics_and_community_grants/.

Background on the program and a list of previous grantees are available at http://www.miami.edu/index.php/ethics/projects/arsht_research_on_ethics_and_community_grants/arsht_grant_awardees/.

Prospective applicants are strongly urged to contact UM Ethics Programs directors, Anita Cava ([email protected] or 305-284-5084) or Ken Goodman ([email protected] or 305-243-5723) to discuss ideas, ask questions, etc.

A trustee, philanthropist and community leader, Arsht has contributed $3 million to the University of Miami Ethics Programs, constituting the largest gift for ethics in Florida history. Arsht funds support a variety of projects, including the ethics research program, a distinguished speaker series, distinguished faculty awards, undergraduate ethics debates, and visiting scholars.
