UM Launches Two New Online Master’s Degree Programs

(September 26, 2014) – The University of Miami is now registering students for two new, fully online degree programs: a Master’s in Finance and a Master’s in Sport Administration. Both programs will begin classes in January 2015. The programs are among the University of Miami’s innovative efforts to respond to the evolving needs of today’s students and working professionals.

“Online learning is part of UM’s strategic plan to expand access to our renowned faculty and educational programs and the ’Canes family,” said Thomas J. LeBlanc, UM’s executive vice president and provost.

The Online Master’s in Finance program is designed for working professionals in the field, as well as those with other backgrounds. Offering access to the same renowned School of Business Administration faculty as the campus program, it focuses on real-world business challenges with two tracks of study: Corporate Finance and Financial Decision-Making. Students can complete this accelerated program in about 16 months and earn certificates in each track as they progress.

The Online Master’s in Sport Administration program, offered by the School of Education and Human Development, positions graduates for career advancement in a range of fields, from sport communications and law to professional athletics administration. Students can complete the practitioner-focused program online in 20 months, taking courses that cover leadership, globalization, sponsorships, marketing, fiscal management, and law.

UM will manage these online programs with support from Laureate Partners, a unit of Laureate Education that offers universities a customized approach to expand their reach online, on-ground, and around the world. Courses will begin in January, pending approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

UHealth at Coral Gables Named First Presenting Sponsor for Festival Miami

(September 26, 2014) — UHealth at Coral Cables, a new comprehensive outpatient location of UHealth – University of Miami Health System now under construction on UM’s Coral Gables campus and scheduled to open in summer 2016, is the first presenting sponsor for the Frost School of Music’s renowned Festival Miami, now in its 31st season.

Running this year from October 10 through November 8, Festival Miami presented by UHealth Coral Gables will present 35 concerts, master classes, and lectures grouped into four themes: Great Performances, Music of the Americas, Jazz and Beyond, and Creative American Music. The festival will bring hundreds of guest, faculty, and student artists together to perform and interact with more than 12,000 music patrons.

Festival Miami is widely considered Florida’s premier live music festival by artists and audiences alike. Events are generally held in the recently renovated 600-seat Maurice Gusman Concert Hall, 1314 Miller Drive, on the Coral Gables campus. The festival provides a comfortable, affordable, and acoustically excellent opportunity for area residents and visitors to enjoy great music.

UHealth at Coral Gables will be located at the corner of Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Dickinson Drive on the Coral Gables campus. The state-of-the-art facility will provide convenient access to UHealth’s expertise in specialty care—including its acclaimed Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Services will include urgent care, outpatient surgery, physical therapy, sports medicine, diagnostic imaging, and more. There will also be a dedicated 1,000-space parking garage, valet parking, and on-site café.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (September 26, 2014) – U Got Consent? Members of the Yellow Rose Society asked the University of Miami community that question last Thursday, as they took a public stand against sexual violence. “It’s something important that everyone should be aware of,” said Guerdiana Thelomar, a member of the student organization dedicated to women’s empowerment. “It’s an issue that’s prevalent throughout universities and is only recently coming to light.” Read the full story

CORAL GABLES, FL (September 26, 2014) – The University of Miami Sue and Leonard Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies, the George Feldenkreis Program in Judaic Studies and The National Jewish Theater Foundation (NJTF) will launch the ground-breaking digital Holocaust Theater Catalog (HTC) on October 7. The event will include a special screening of the acclaimed NJTF filmed play “The Soap Myth” from 6 to 9 p.m. that evening at the Cosford Cinema on UM’s Coral Gables campus.

The National Jewish Theater Foundation has designated the Miller Center at the University of Miami as the permanent home for its digital Holocaust Theater Catalog—a website project of the NJTF Holocaust Theater International Initiative (HTII). Read the full story

$1 Million Grant from State of Florida Will Support UM HIV/AIDS Research

MIAMI, Fla. (September 23, 2014) – Governor Rick Scott and Senator Rene Garcia visited the Miller School of Medicine Monday to present a check from the state of Florida for $1 million to advance HIV/AIDS research. The funding will help support ongoing AIDS research programs and extend the research capacity of UM’s Center for AIDS Research through synergistic collaborations with investigators at other institutions in South Florida. In addition, the funds will promote the creation of the University of Miami HIV/AIDS Institute, which will serve as the umbrella under which clinical, research, and philanthropic activities at UM will be coordinated.
