Author, activist, and Miami native Sam Daley-Harris will return to the University of Miami on Thursday, January 15 to deliver the Distinguished Alumni Lecture, “Making the Difference You’ve Always Dreamed of Making,” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Newman Alumni Center on the Coral Gables campus.

The CEO of the Center for Citizen Empowerment and Transformation, Daley-Harris will share insights and strategies for making a profound difference in the public sphere from the 20th anniversary edition of his book Reclaiming Our Democracy: Healing the Break between People and Government.

He recently completed a 30-city speaking tour on the 20th anniversary edition of his book and was featured in the New York Times article “Lobbying for the Greater Good.”

A songwriter who earned degrees in music from the University of Miami, played percussion in the Miami Philharmonic for 12 years, and taught music, Daley-Harris founded RESULTS, an international citizens lobby dedicated to creating the political will to end hunger and the worst aspects of poverty. Today, there are 100 RESULTS groups in the U.S. and 40 more in six other countries. In 2007 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Muhammad Yunus said: “….no other organization has been as critical a partner in seeing to it that microcredit is used as a tool to eradicate poverty and empower women than RESULTS.”

Daley-Harris also founded the Microcredit Summit Campaign, a project of RESULTS Educational Fund. Its 1997 Microcredit Summit was attended by more than 2,900 delegates from 137 countries and launched a campaign to reach 100 million of the world’s poorest families with credit for self-employment and other financial and business services—a goal that was surpassed in 2007. He launched the Center for Citizen Empowerment and Transformation in 2012, to help organizations train their members to create champions in Congress and the media for their cause.
