Spring semester cooking classes include menus from around the world

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (January 14, 2014) – Cooking meals at home can have long-lasting health benefits, and the Patti and Allan Herbert Wellness Center is offering five cooking classes this semester to give participants control over what goes on their plates and into their bodies.

“Cooking our own meals allows us to gain more control of what goes on our plates,” says Ashley Falcon, assistant director of wellness programs at the Herbert Wellness Center. “We can choose healthier, fresher foods, cook them in healthier ways, and control our portions.”

Open to members and non-members, these classes are taught by a professional chef and include hands-on demonstrations, dinner, and plenty of leftovers. Registration is now open for these classes:

    • Moroccan: Monday, January 26 at 6:30 p.m.
    • Desserts: Wednesday, February 11 at 6:30 p.m.
    • Spanish/Mexican: Thursday, February 23 at 6:30 p.m.
    • Italian: Tuesday, March 3 at 6:30 p.m.
    • Thai: Wednesday, April 15 at 6:30 p.m.

The menu for the January 26 Moroccan class includes tagine with caramelized onions and tomatoes, Ras El Hanout (a Moroccan spice blend), and tagine beef with Medjool dates.

Registration is available online at miami.edu/wellness or by calling the sales office at 305-284-5433 Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Classes cost $20 for members and $25 for non-members. In addition to regularly scheduled classes, private group classes are available and can be coordinated through the sales office.
