‘Food Safety Modernization Act: The Future of Food Litigation’ on February 6

    CORAL GABLES, FLA. (January 26, 2015) — The University of Miami School of Law Inter-American Law Review Symposium will address the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) on Friday, February 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Storer Auditorium at the School of Business Administration, 5250 University Drive, Coral Gables campus.
    Topics of interest will center around the FSMA’s import and transport regulations, its impact on domestic and Inter-American agribusiness, and the effect FSMA’s rules will have on food litigation in the future.
    Keynote speaker William Marler of Marler Clark, LLP is an accomplished attorney and national expert in food safety. Marler has become the most prominent foodborne illness lawyer in America and a major force in food policy in the U.S. and around the world. The 2011 book, Poisoned: The True Story of the Deadly E. coli Outbreak that Changed the Way Americans Eat, by best-selling author Jeff Benedict, chronicles the Jack-in-the-Box outbreak and the rise of Marler as a food safety attorney.
    Other panelists will include Jamie Renner, an assistant professor of law and supervisor of the Food and Agriculture Clinic at Vermont Law School’s Center for Agriculture and Food Systems; K&L Gates attorney Suzan Onel, whose practice focuses on regulatory issues involving foods, medical devices, dietary supplements, over-the-counter drugs, and cosmetics and consumer products; Arnold Friede, principal in Arnold I. Friede & Associates; attorney Jeff Bailey, who provides counseling, instruction, and training with respect to corporate compliance matters nationwide; Dr. Melvin Kramer, who has 30 years of professional experience in the food industry; and Jim Prevor, widely recognized as a leader in understanding and assessing the state of perishable food industries.
    The symposium is sponsored by K&L Gates, a global law firm with more than 2,000 lawyers on five continents, and the University of Miami School of Law. The symposium is funded in part by the Law Activity Fee Allocation Committee.
    Parking is available at the Pavia Garage, 5615 Pavia Street, on the Coral Gables campus. The event is free and open to the public.
