CORAL GABLES, Fla. (August 17, 2015)—The University of Miami has been named one of the 2015 Promising Places to Work in Student Affairs at Research Institutions by the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) and Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, an honor that recognizes UM’s Student Affairs for its commitment to workplace diversity, equitable staffing practices, and supportive work environments.

The study, conducted by the Center for Higher Education Enterprise (CHEE) at The Ohio State University, employed a Web-based survey approach to elicit information from ACPA member institutions.

“It is an honor to be recognized as a promising place to work in student affairs,” said Patricia Whitely, vice president for student affairs. “UM’s Division of Student Affairs values our diverse staff, which includes professionals with varied experiences from public and private colleges and universities. Our student affairs professionals are respected campus partners who are skilled and comfortable in encouraging our students to explore and communicate on topics that affect them as global citizens.”

The University of Miami and Florida State University were the only Florida schools included on the list of the 14 institutions that made the list of the nation’s promising research institutions for student affairs.

Promising Places to Work in Student Affairs is part of a collaborative initiative between ACPA and Diverse, which consists of a national study conducted by CHEE at Ohio State, under the leadership of Terrell L. Strayhorn, who said, “This study yields insight into diversity in the student affairs workplace and offers a useful tool for employers, career services staff, and job-seekers across the country.”

Full results from the national study are presented in the May 21 edition of Diverse magazine.
