CORAL GABLES, Fla. (September 2, 2015) – The Patti and Allan Herbert Wellness Center invites members and non-members to register for its instructional cooking classes. Each class has its own theme and menu. Classes are held in the instructional kitchen on the Herbert Wellness Center’s second floor.

Because September is Fruits and Veggies – More Matters Month, the center’s first cooking class, which begins at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 16, is themed “Summer’s Bounty: Fruits and Vegetables.” Prepare your taste buds for spicy roasted corn and feta salad, Thai green papaya and mango salad with cilantro dressing, and lentil salad with Kalamata olives and fresh mint.

Future class themes include Cuban Staples on Thursday, October 1; Vegetarian on Wednesday, October 21; Delicias Espanola on Thursday, October 29; Thanksgiving Feast on Wednesday, November 18; and Classic French on Thursday, December 3. All classes are taught by Chef Mercedes Varela-Mendez and include personalized cooking lessons, a meal, and plenty of leftovers.

“Our cooking classes are not just about preparing delicious and healthy dishes,” says Ashley Falcon, assistant director of wellness. “The chef imparts information about the ingredients and techniques being used and encourages participants to share their cooking experience with each other. These classes tend to fill up quickly, so I recommend registering soon in order to reserve your spot.”

Each class costs $20 for center members and $25 for non-members. Registration is available online or by calling the sales office at 305-284-5433 Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Herbert Wellness Center is celebrating 20 years of defining wellness for the University of Miami community and will honor its anniversary with several special programs and events throughout the year.
