CORAL GABLES, Fla. (September 2, 2015)—The University of Miami Police Department will host its annual safety fair on Thursday, September 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. around the UC Rock Plaza, where officers will team up with UM’s Office of Emergency Management to promote U Guardian, a new safety app for smartphone users, and with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to promote the “Put-it-Down” campaign against texting and driving.

Faculty, staff, and students may download U Guardian for free on IOS or Android devices to gain several new safety options at their fingertips, including a one-touch call button for UM police and a way for ’Canes to track the progress of friends on and off campus. While supplies last, fair-goers who show the downloaded U Guardian app to UMPD will score a free cupcake. For more information about U Guardian, view the video.

FDOT representatives will provide information not only about texting and driving, but all facets of travel safety, including vehicle, bike, and pedestrian safety.

Representatives from Miami-Dade Transit also will provide information about the new pedestrian bridge being built over US 1, while representatives from UMPD and numerous police departments and organizations will demonstrate some of the tools they use to enhance public safety. Donning a special, padded suit, UMPD personnel will promote the department’s Women’s Self-Defense classes.

The City of Miami Police Department also will be on hand to demonstrate its BAT mobile, a state-of-the-art, specially equipped vehicle used to test and identify impaired drivers; the American Automobile Association, with an impaired-driving simulator; the Florida Highway Patrol, with a special rollover vehicle demonstration on seatbelt safety; Miami-Dade County Police, with its Crime Prevention Display Vehicle, which houses information on the effects of drinking and driving, drug awareness, crime prevention, and other community-based programs; and the Coral Gables Police Department with two motorcycles and a K-9 unit.

Representatives from UM’s WalkSafe and BikeSafe programs, Community Traffic Safety Team, Association of Commuter Students, ’Canes Emergency Response Team, No Zebras, SART, and Student Health Services also will have a presence at the safety fair, as will members of the student Group Pier 21, which plans to hand out free pizza.

For more information about the fair, U Guardian, or any of the other programs and services UMPD provides, contact John Gulla, crime prevention specialist, at [email protected] or visit www.miami.edu/police.
