CORAL GABLES, Fla. (January 27, 2016) – It takes more than daily physical activity to maintain good health. It is through a holistic approach to wellness that you can achieve optimal health. For many UM employees, the Patti and Allan Herbert Wellness Center is their wellness hub at the University of Miami. The center offers an assortment of programs open to members and non-members, such as cooking, meditation and smoking cessation classes—all designed to maintain and improve your well-being.

The Herbert Wellness Center’s instructional cooking classes provide a classroom setting for a variety of themed cooking classes. Each class includes personalized cooking lessons, a meal and plenty of leftovers. The remaining spring 2016 cooking classes include “5 or Fewer Ingredients” on February 10, “Caribbean” on March 17, and “Quick & Easy’ on April 7. Classes, which are ideal for an after-work treat, cost $20 for members and $25 for non-members.

Find your inner peace with evening meditation classes brought to you by Sri Chinmoy Centres International and the Department of Wellness and Recreation. All classes are free and open to the public. Remaining meditation classes this semester are on February 18, March 18, and April 18.

Mindfulness and U, a collaboration with UM’s UMindfulness program, brings together cutting-edge brain research and mindfulness practice training. This partnership brings free mindfulness workshops to UM students, faculty and staff. Three workshops will be offered this semester: the first on February 9 is an introduction to mindfulness, the second on March 24 offers an immersion into mindfulness practice using sound, and the third on April 6 teaches mindfulness techniques incorporating movement.

Other Herbert Wellness Center wellness programs include BeSmokeFree, an award-winning smoking cessation program, computerized dietary analyses, and massage therapy. For a complete listing of all programs and services, visit the Herbert Wellness Center’s website.

Registration for all Herbert Wellness Center programs is available online or by calling the sales office at 305-284-5433.

The Herbert Wellness Center is celebrating 20 years of defining wellness for the University of Miami community and will honor its anniversary with several special programs and events throughout the year.
