With its airy, modern, and high-tech new quarters, the Office of Undergraduate Admission is able to carry out its mission under one roof.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (August 8, 2016) — When University of Miami assistant director of admission Shane Hinton addressed a group of prospective students and their parents recently, he proudly opened the session by showing them a short video, “Welcome to the Opportunity of Miami,” that displayed the U in all its glory.

This is a new message for the Office of Undergraduate Admission—that along with its new state-of-the-art office in the heart of campus, the U is like the city surrounding it: diverse, resilient and forward thinking.

“We are a relatively young institution,” said Karen Long, assistant vice president of undergraduate admission and marketing. “But for a relatively young university, we offer so much academically. And we also offer a city that is the city of the future and a gateway to the different hemispheres.”

The new admissions office reflects the institution’s forward-thinking and modern mentality. Now centrally located on Stanford Circle, the 8,312-square-foot facility offers open spaces decorated in shades of light green and orange, where visitors can use the i-Pads that line the walls and enjoy a video presentation that highlights the various opportunities offered to UM graduates.

The move from the Ashe building to the larger space has enabled the office to restructure and centralize all its services, brining the  international student admission efforts to the new building, too. Long said. The new quarters also feature larger rooms able to accommodate visitors, as well as conference rooms for staff meetings.

All this helps with the main mission of undergraduate admissions, said Long, which is to accept the best possible group of students each year. This year, UM received 32,512 applications for the freshman class and admitted 12,211 students, an acceptance rate of 38 percent.

The 2016 class is one of the most diverse ever, said Long. Of the 2,025 freshmen who start at the U this week, 10 percent are black, 12 percent Asian, 19 percent Hispanic, and 49 percent white.

While 30 percent of the members of the Class of 2020 hail from Florida, 70 percent come from 43 states and 64 countries, with the top three being China, Kuwait, and Venezuela.
