As the world of work rapidly changes, organizations are looking for ways to help employees balance work and personal obligations while meeting business needs. The University of Miami has long offered supervisors and staff the option to create work schedules that align with the needs of their areas. To provide additional assistance and streamline the process to create an alternative work arrangement, the University has launched a new telecommuting policy and guidelines to help employees and their supervisors work together to create a telecommuting arrangement.
“We currently have several departments across the University that have successfully launched telecommuting agreements with teams and individuals, meeting personal and operational needs,” said Nerissa Morris, vice president for human resources. “While we all agree about the benefits of an alternative work arrangement, sometimes we need assistance on how to bring that to life. These guidelines and tools will make it easier for employees and their supervisors to take that next step.”
The new guidelines were created based on feedback received from leaders and teams across the University. A committee worked together to benchmark best practices and determine the best solution for staff at UM.
The new Alternative Work Arrangement website includes information specifically on telecommuting agreements and the process for requesting a remote work schedule. Plans are underway to add additional flexible work options, guidelines, and tools to the menu with compressed and flexible workweek next on the work team’s agenda.
