The home team dropped another game, this one  4-0, to the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday evening, but that didn’t dampen spirits at the University of Miami Family Night with the Miami Marlins, which along with face-painting, autographs, and other fun-filled activities, celebrated the visionary accomplishments of outgoing Provost Thomas J. LeBlanc, who threw out the first pitch.

Thousands of members of  the ‘Canes community, many of them wearing orange and waving signs with a cut-out of LeBlanc’s face, shouted and cheered at Marlins Park in Little Havana, where the Marlins also presented the University with two oversized checks representing support for scholarships. One, for $7,500, was awarded to the School of Education and Human Development for the Susanne Rayson Scholarship in Broadcast Journalism;  the other, for $5,000, was awarded to the School of Communication’s Sports Administration Scholarship.

Now in its 12th year, the annual family day is designed to show the University’s appreciation for the dedication of its faculty and staff, but on Saturday it was the faculty and staff’s turn to show their appreciation for LeBlanc, who is heading to Washington, D.C., after 12 transformative years at the U to become president of The George Washington University.
