CORAL GABLES, Fla. (November 22, 2017)—University employees have accessed more than 2,300 courses, certifications, and books since Talent and Organizational Development, in collaboration with University of Miami Information Technology, rolled out new professional development opportunities in ULearn two weeks ago.

The expanded ULearn offerings give all University faculty, staff, and student employees access to thousands of online professional development options that fit their unique needs, interests, and schedules. New “bite-sized” content—short but impactful instruction on a variety of subjects—was particularly helpful to Adeline Lalanne, office manager for the Central Business Office, who was the first UM employee to complete one of the new courses.

“The format and style of the new modules make it easy for leaders and staff to acquire skills that are easily transferable to their daily activities with minimal downtime,” Lalanne said. “From watching the video, I learned all the steps needed from conception to implementation to successfully manage my project. The new resources available in ULearn will make it easier to enhance my skills and do my job more effectively and efficiently.”

Employees also have access to curated, featured training on a variety of helpful topics that will change periodically to spotlight new courses and curriculum. Current trainings include: First Time Manager Essentials, Microsoft Excel, Project Management, Working with Difficult People, and Navigating through Change.

Greg Brenner, executive director of Talent and Organizational Development, said professional development opportunities were expanded in response to the feedback faculty and staff provided on the Gallup Engagement Survey and to UM President Julio Frenk during the “one action” small-group conversations he held across the University following the survey.

“Fostering continuous learning is essential for advancing our organization,” Brenner said. “By offering our employees the ability to learn when they need it, we are encouraging them to be an active participant in expanding their knowledge and skills.”
