As the Miami Hurricanes prepare to take on the Florida State Seminoles on the football field on Saturday, October 9, another UM team will take its first step toward a repeat National Championship.
In the tradition of the University’s National Championship Ethics Bowl team from 2007, UM’s 2010 team will compete in the UM Ethics Bowl from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the University of Miami School of Business Administration, as the team prepares to compete in the regional championships in November.
The UM Ethics Team upset the U.S. Military Academy for top honors at the National Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl in 2007, and since then UM teams have placed in the national event’s Final Four, mid-Atlantic region co-championship round, and runner-up round twice in the National Bioethics Bowl in 2009 and 2010.
Teams of students argue thorny ethical dilemmas before a panel of local businesspeople. Chosen by audition, UM’s “all star” team will compete in regional and ultimately national championship competitions.
Topics include citizenship status of children of illegal immigrants, avatar child pornography, Spain’s ban on bullfighting, investing in viatical insurance policies, Facebook privacy, and more.
The public is invited to attend the Ethics Bowl at the UM School of Business Administration, 5250 University Drive in Coral Gables.
