Acclaimed Journalist Lisa Ling to Speak at Fall Convocation

    Lisa LingLisa Ling, the acclaimed American journalist and writer best known for her role as host of Our America on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, will be the University of Miami’s 2013 Fall Convocation speaker on Monday, September 9, at 4 p.m. at BankUnited Center. Ling will present “Open Heart, Open Mind.” Doors open at 3 p.m.

    In the first season of Our America, Ling embedded in a Midwest town ravaged by heroin and got exclusive access inside an anti-gay religious movement. In season two, she witnessed post-traumatic stress disorder in returning war veterans and went undercover to investigate underage sex trafficking in the nation’s capital.

    As a former field correspondent for The Oprah Winfrey Show and contributor to ABC News’ Nightline and National Geographic’s Explorer, Ling has reported from dozens of countries. She got her start in journalism as a correspondent for Channel One News, covering the civil war in Afghanistan, and later became a co-host of ABC’s hit show The View.

    Ling was a special correspondent for CNN’s “Planet in Peril” series and is a contributing editor for USA Today’s USA Weekend magazine. She is the co-author of Mother, Daughter, Sister, Bride: Rituals of Womanhood and Somewhere Inside: One Sister’s Captivity in North Korea and the Other’s Fight to Bring Her Home, which she penned with her journalist sister, Laura Ling.
