Linda Sher-Collado, a longtime reservationist at the University Center/Student Activities Center who was beloved by students and the community, passed away Friday from cancer.

“She always tried to help, sharing her ‘can do’ spirit, positive attitude and creative approach warmly with three generations of UM students,” said Pat Whitely, vice president for student affairs. “She always adored the U and would stop at nothing to help our students make their programs and events a reality.”

For the past 23 years, Sher-Collado worked as a reservationist in the Whitten University Center/Student Activities Center. An avid sailor who lived in Coconut Grove, she had recently transitioned to the SAC and assumed a number of new responsibilities. She also managed the UC Pool for many years and was always supportive of the UM Swimming and Diving Program.

This past spring, she was nominated for the Association of Greek Letter Organization (AGLO) Outstanding Faculty Member & Staff Award and was recognized at the organization’s annual Apple Polishing Reception for all of her hard work on behalf of the students. She also served as a member of the Student Affairs Staff Development Committee.

“Above all,” Whitely said, “Linda was a consummate Miami Hurricane, a great person who never hesitated to share a smile or a hello as she buzzed through her day. She cared and loved our students and community. She will be sorely missed.”

Sher-Collado is survived by her husband, Alberto, and two sons, Ian and Griffin, a current undergraduate student at the University of Miami.

A memorial viewing is scheduled for Monday, November 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Van Orsdel Funeral Home, 4600 S.W. 8 Street, Coral Gables, Fla. 33134 (305-667-6070).
