The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has nominated Jeffery Stern, a faculty member in the UM School of Communication’s Department of Cinema and Interactive Media, for a 2012 Emmy Award for Outstanding Editing on a TV series for his work on the hit HBO show Boardwalk Empire. The 2012 Emmy Award nominations were announced July 19 in Los Angeles.

“It’s a thrill to work on a terrific show such as Boardwalk Empire with a talented and dedicated crew,” Stern said. “The commitment of producers who appreciate the impact of sound and are willing to make the investment necessary to put it on screen cannot be understated. The unparalleled quality is evident in every aspect of the show.”

In addition to Boardwalk Empire, Stern has worked on more than 100 films, including The Silence of the Lambs, American Splendor, and Goodfellas. In 2003, he was nominated for an Emmy for Best Sound – Documentary for his work on Joni Mitchell: A Woman of Heart and Mind.

Stern joined the University of Miami School of Communication in 2005 and teaches motion picture editing and post-production sound editing. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Philadelphia Academy of the Arts and has served as a filmmaker in residence at the North Carolina School of the Arts and as adjunct professor at The New School in New York.

The 2012 Emmy Awards will be broadcast at 7 p.m. EST, September 23, on ABC.
