The University of Miami Institute for Advanced Study of the Americas is hosting a special briefing by Tamara Taraciuk Broner, Human Rights Watch’s lead researcher for Venezuela, at a lunch reception at 12 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, at Albert Pick Hall, 1541 Brescia Avenue. Institute Director Dr. Felicia Knaul will moderate the discussion on the current situation in Venezuela.

Broner joined Human Rights Watch as a fellow in September 2005 and a year later became HRW’s Mexico researcher (2006-2009). She is currently a senior researcher with HRW’s Americas Division, covering several countries in the region. A native of Venezuela who grew up in Argentina, Broner previously was a junior scholar at the at the Latin American Program of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, where she coordinated a project on citizen security in Latin America, and worked at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the Organization of American States (OAS).

She studied law at Torcuato Di Tella University in Argentina and holds a post-graduate diploma on human rights and transitional justice from the University of Chile, and a Master’s degree in Law (LLM) from Columbia Law School.
