About Veritas

I. MISSION

The only University-wide electronic newsletter at the University of Miami, Veritas provides an engaging and relevant mix of University-related news, campus information, announcements, and events listings to keep our large and diverse group of employees well informed about their workplace.

II. BACKGROUND

Targeted to UM faculty and staff, Veritas is distributed by University Communications to all University employees every Monday morning, except for holidays and during winter break.

Veritas is the successor to e-Veritas, which was introduced in the fall of 1999 as the primary internal communications tool for disseminating important, timely news about the Coral Gables and Rosenstiel campuses. In the fall of 2002, e-Veritas was expanded to include employees at the Miller School of Medicine campus, becoming UM’s only University-wide newsletter. Redesigned in early 2017, Veritas dropped the ‘e’ because it is longer necessary to distinguish the electronic newsletter from the original Veritas print edition.

Also in 2017, the Miller School and UHealth launched InventUM, an e-newsletter that shares developments in research, education, and patient care, and connects with a news hub. To submit medical-related news items, email them to [email protected].

 III. POLICIES

Veritas will list only University-related news or events sponsored by an official and recognized University group, organization, or department and submitted by a faculty or staff member from their University email account.

Student organizations hosting events or fundraisers should utilize the ‘Canes Calendar, IbisNews, or The Miami Hurricane student newspaper.

Lectures, conferences, seminars, etc., cannot be listed in more than two issues. Veritas will not list fundraising events unless the money raised goes to the University or, as in the case of the United Way, UM is an officially sanctioned beneficiary.

All UM employees, defined as anyone who receives a paycheck from the University, are added to the listserv to receive Veritas and may not unsubscribe.

IV. SUBMITTING ITEMS TO VERITAS

University faculty, staff, and administrators must submit information to the Veritas mailbox, [email protected], at least three (3) working days prior to the Veritas email distribution date (which barring a holiday, would be by 12 p.m. on the Wednesday before the Monday distribution). Items that miss the deadline will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Veritas accepts announcements of all University-sponsored events, athletics events, campus events, programs, seminars, fundraisers, etc. Submissions must be in paragraph form, with all essential information (who, what, where, when, cost, and contact information) included in complete sentences. When relevant, hyperlinks should be included, but the supplier of the link is responsible for verifying the content found on another page. Items can be submitted as a Word document attachment or simply written out in an email message to [email protected]. Items submitted as flyers or PDF documents will be included, if appropriate, only as a headline with a link to the document. Only submissions sent by a University of Miami faculty or staff member will be considered for possible inclusion. Student groups and organizations must have their faculty advisor send in the item.

The Veritas editor reserves the right to re-write submissions for clarity and/or length.

  1. Commercial Services
Only internal commercial services, such as Miller School clinics, Hurricane Sports, UM Bookstores, etc., will be included. External companies/organizations that are classified as “nonprofit” also may advertise discounted prices/rates available to University employees through Veritas.
  2. Events at the UM Watsco Center
Entertainment events, such as concerts, seminars, and family shows, may be included in Veritas as a service to the University community. University Communications reserves the right to accept or deny publishing of any event in Veritas.
  3. Veritas “EXTRA”
For occasions/instances when news or information needs to be disseminated to the University community immediately, the Division of University of Communications can distribute an additional issue of Veritas, called Veritas EXTRA. Veritas EXTRA will only be used for emergency or major breaking news or information. The Office of the President, the Provost, or the Vice President of Communications may approve other, non-emergency uses on a case-by-case basis.
  4. Obituaries
Veritas will publish announcements pertaining to the deaths of current University of Miami faculty, staff, administrators, and members of the Board of Trustees if a memorial service is open to the University community. Obituaries of former University employees will be restricted to those who have made a significant contribution to the University, as determined by the Vice President for Communications.
  5. Opt-Out of Receiving Veritas
Employees may not opt-out of receiving Veritas as it contains essential information for faculty and staff, including benefits, campus construction and disruptions, and other important news and information. Additionally, Veritas enables the prompt dissemination of emergency alerts and/or reminders, such as in the case of a water main break or immediate changes to employee benefits.
  6. Personnel Items
Personnel items, such as new hires, promotions, and retirements, are not included in Veritas unless the new hires, promotions, and retirements are at the dean and vice president level, or above. Major awards of national and international distinction, as well as honors conferred by the University, will be included.
  7. Religious Items
Only events and news submitted by a University-sponsored/based organization will be included in Veritas.
  8. Research Requests, Grant Proposals and Calls for Papers
Departments and schools/colleges wishing to publicize requests for research and grant proposals and papers from external organizations should contact the Office of Research.
  9. Running Items in Consecutive Issues of Veritas
In general, an announcement about an event, such as a lecture, will run in Veritas the week before either the actual date of the event or the R.S.V.P. deadline. Items will not run for more than two (2) issues in a row. The person who submits the item can choose to have the item run in two (2) non-consecutive issues.
  10. Support Groups
University of Miami medical or psychological groups or organizations often hold counseling or support groups for members of the community. As these are open to the entire community, and not only for faculty and staff, it is not considered University news and thus not eligible for inclusion in Veritas.
  11. Student Organizations
Events or fundraisers for officially sanctioned student groups or organizations are not eligible for inclusion in Veritas. These groups should utilize the ‘Canes Calendar (www.miami.edu/calendar), the student e-newsletter IbisNews ([email protected]) and the student newspaper, The Miami Hurricane.
