Rulers of the Roller Rink

Members of the University of Miami’s title-winning roller hockey team showed off their championship trophy recently to their No. 1 hockey mom: UM President Donna E. Shalala. The team captured the Division II National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (NCRHA) Championship on April 10 in Madison, Wisconsin, defeating Florida Gulf Coast University 4-3 in double overtime. The championship comes amid revelations that the squad battled tremendous adversity throughout the tournament, competing despite the fact that teammates and brothers Josh and Jake Shuman lost their mother, Mara, three weeks prior to the contest.

Roller hockey is a club sport at UM and other colleges and universities. With nearly 200 teams and 2,500 players nationwide, the NCRHA is the governing body of collegiate roller hockey in the United States.
