Professor Emeritus Tom Herbert, who passed away last November, loved the outdoors and had a passion for science.

The Department of Biology will host an informal gathering in memory of professor emeritus Tom Herbert on Saturday, January 25, at 2 p.m. in the Cox Science Center, room 166. Professor Herbert passed away on November 21, 2013, in an automobile accident near Irkutsk, Siberia. Professor of Biology Michael S. Gaines directs a scholarship program that has received a $600,000 NSF grant to support community college transfer students majoring in biology.

A $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) will help the University of Miami boost the number of underrepresented students in the field of biology and could serve as a springboard to their pursuit of advanced degrees in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects.
