In a move to provide the University community with the most accurate and reliable time, Facilities Management has installed atomic wall clocks in the Dooley Memorial Classroom Building that automatically self adjust each day. Unlike standard manual wall clocks, these atomic clocks sync daily at 2 a.m. by radio signals received from the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder, Colorado. The clocks also automatically self adjust during the year when daylight savings is in effect.
Installation of the clocks was prompted by a request from Student Government Senator Joseph Choi that clocks in Coral Gables campus classrooms needed to be better synchronized.
Facilities Management will perform preventative maintenance and monitor the precision of the clocks. Upon successful completion of the trial, additional wall clocks will be placed in classrooms throughout the Coral Gables campus.
