fsla-changesThe University is offering multiple live seminars, including “Redefining Your Budget” with Fidelity and “Managing Change” with the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, to assist employees affected by changes to federal overtime regulations that take effect December 1. Affected faculty and staff are also encouraged to access one of three informational webcasts offered this week, or to attend one of the live sessions offered thereafter on all three campuses.

The Department of Labor announced earlier this year that is was updating the Fair Labor Standards Act’s (FLSA) overtime rules by increasing the salary threshold for qualifying for overtime pay from $23,660 to $47,476. The University began notifying employees who are affected by the change last month. Depending on their “job profile,” some employees will transition from exempt to non-exempt, even if their salary meets or exceeds the new FLSA salary threshold of $47,476.

Other employees will remain exempt and have their salary adjusted to the new FLSA salary threshold. Whether a position is exempt (salaried) or non-exempt (hourly) depends on the primary job functions of and market data for the position. Part-time exempt employees who earn less than the new salary threshold will transition to non-exempt.

For additional information regarding the change and how it will impact UM, please visit the miami.edu/FLSA and watch the Department of labor video, OVERTIME: It’s About Time.
