WAM_picJoin the University of Miami Counseling Center’s Sexual Assault Resource Team (SART) and Counseling Outreach Peer Education (COPE) for the annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” on Thursday, April  7, and take a stand against sexualized violence against women. At the event, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Rock and Foote Green, men will be asked to walk a mile, figuratively, in one-inch heels to raise awareness of the causes, effects, and remediation of rape, sexual assault, and gender violence.

Women are also encouraged to support this cause and  participate in the walk. Alicia Consuegra, board member of the SafeSpace Foundation Inc., will provide testimony about domestic violence and information about the foundation. The keynote speaker, Neil Irvin, executive director of Men Can Stop Rape, will discuss “Engaging Men in Bystander Intervention.”

T-shirts will be available in advance and the day of event with a minimum $5 donation. All proceeds will go to the SafeSpace Women’s Shelter. The Counseling Center is also accepting donations of new toiletries (shampoo, body wash, soap, shave gel, etc.) for the women at the shelter. You may drop off donations at the Counseling Center, 1204 Dickinson Drive, beginning Monday, April 4, or bring them to the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event.

SART and COPE invite everyone in the ’Canes community to participate as individuals or by creating a team to walk together. The two teams with the most participants will win a prize. For more information, visit the event page. Register here.
