UM Ethics Programs Annual Dialogues in Research Ethics Series

Dec ’09

1:30 pm

Attend “Research on Prisoners: Nuremberg to Guantanamo?” with Steven Miles, professor of medicine and bioethics at University of Minnesota, from 1:30 p.m. on Friday, December 18 at the Mailman Center for Child Development, room 3023.

The Nuremberg doctors trials were in part about the conduct of experiments on prisoners – experiments that were largely designed for protection of the Nazi armed forces, although some were designed to validate the false science of Nazi anthropology or to implement the Nazi program of race hygiene.  From these trials arose the Nuremberg Code, the predecessor document for research ethics internationally and in the United States.  There is increasing evidence of coerced interrogational research in the “war on terror” prisons.  (There is no evidence of U.S. medical complicity with regard to anything like the euthanasia or race hygiene programs.)  This Dialogue will explore and discuss the Nuremberg Code and look at select war-on-terror government documents.

Dialogues in Research Ethics is a series of monthly conferences. For more information, phone UM Ethics Programs at 305-243-5723 or send e-mail to [email protected].

Narrated by Maya Angelou, this powerful documentary reveals the story of a brave group of people who fought Hitler with the only weapons they had: charcoal, pencil stubs, shreds of paper, and memories etched in their minds. Filmmaker Hilary Helstein will host a Q & A session after all screenings (EXCEPT the 8:15pm screening on Sunday). Admission is $6 for all University of Miami alumni, faculty, and staff, and free for students. General admission is $8. The film screens on Friday, December 18 at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday, December 19 at 3:15 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.; and Sunday, December 20 at 3:15 and 8:15 p.m. For more information, visit www.cosfordcinema.com.

Georg Nigl appears in the signature title role. Also featured is Roberta Invernizzi, one of the most sought-after soprano soloists in early music.  Admission is $18 for all UM alumni, faculty, and staff, and free for students.
