City of Coral Gables commissioners got the chance to meet the newest leaders of the University of Miami’s Athletic Department on May 24, when UM President Donna E. Shalala introduced Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst, men’s head basketball coach Jim Larranaga, and head football coach Al Golden at a city commission meeting. During the proceedings, President Shalala welcomed newly elected Coral Gables Mayor Jim Cason and Commissioner Frank C. Quesada. She also mentioned the great cooperation between UM and The City Beautiful, noting the recent Development Agreement between the two entities and some of the promotional initiatives that have resulted from it, such as free tickets for Coral Gables residents to various sporting and cultural events as well as the Collegetown Lecture Series.

The University of Miami and two of its valued supporters received six awards for wide-ranging contributions to education, philanthropy, health, and biotechnology at the 2011 South Florida Business Leader of the Year awards dinner.
UM received four business leader awards – for being South Florida’s best university and having its best medical school, best hospital, and best biotechnology program – at the May 19 awards ceremony sponsored by Business Leader Media at Jungle Island in Miami. Read the full story

The Center for Hemispheric Policy hosted its sixth annual Latin America Conference on May 6 at the JW Marriott Hotel Miami, with various experts discussing issues and topics that ranged from “The Economic and Political Outlook for the Region” to “Assessing China’s Influence in Latin America.”

Walking a few extra miles and shedding unwanted pounds resulted in huge benefits for a group of University of Miami employees, who not only improved their health and fitness levels but also got the chance to have lunch with UM President Donna E. Shalala. The former secretary of health and human services hosted a special luncheon on May 17 for the winners of the Department of Wellness and Recreation’s Walking ’Canes and ’Canes Biggest Loser programs.
The luncheon, sponsored by Chartwells, is an annual tradition where President Shalala personally congratulates the top ten contestants of the Walking ‘Canes program and the top two winners of the ’Canes Biggest Loser program. Grace Castro and Tim Ramsay were the top female and male ’Canes Biggest Losers of 2011. Both of the programs, offered at the beginning of each calendar year, are open to UM faculty and staff. Theresa L. Ashman
Theresa L. Ashman, a certified public accountant whose 18 years of experience in higher education include implementing several initiatives to improve the financial operations of two of the nation’s best-known institutions, has been named associate vice president and controller at the University of Miami.
“Theresa brings to the University of Miami a wealth of experience at large, complex institutions,” said Joe Natoli, senior vice president for business and finance and chief financial officer. “We are delighted to welcome her to the U.”
For the past four years, Ashman has served as the University of Utah’s controller, a role in which she is responsible for a multitude of departments, including accounts payable, income accounting and student loans, general accounting, property accounting, endowment accounting, contracts and grants accounting, managerial and cost accounting, and merchant cards.
