Holtz Children’s Hospital Ranks Among Nation’s Best

U.S. News & World Report has ranked Holtz Children’s Hospital in eight specialties.

Holtz Children’s Hospital at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Medical Center is among the nation’s top children’s hospitals, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2012-13 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings, published online June 5. The rankings feature 50 hospitals in each of ten pediatric specialties.

Holtz was ranked in eight specialties this year: 26th in nephrology, 36th in diabetes and endocrinology, 38th in both gastroenterology and pulmonology, 39th in urology, 42nd in neonatology, 45th in cardiology and heart surgery, and 47th in orthopedics. Most notably, Holtz earned recognition in two previously unranked specialties, pulmonology and orthopedics, and improved its ranking in three others: gastroenterology, diabetes and endocrinology, and urology. Plastic Surgery Grand Rounds: Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Lasers

Robin Kenneth Rees, Senior Manager in Risk Management, Passes Away

Robin Rees

Whenever University of Miami employees or students got sick or injured while abroad, Robin Rees was often the first on the phone to check on their well-being and render assistance, sometimes going without sleep and working on holidays to make sure they received help.

Like the time Rees worked over the July Fourth weekend arranging for safe and expeditious transportation back to the States for three students who were involved in a bus accident in China. Or the time when he arranged medical treatment for a faculty member who became ill while in the Galapagos Islands—acting so swiftly that the employee quickly recovered and was able to remain on the island to continue critical research. Advances in Geriatrics Summer Conference: The Role of Chronic Disease Self-Management Programs in Keeping Seniors Healthy and Safe

The Miami Area Geriatric Education Center (MAGEC) is once again offering the opportunity to earn up to seven Continuing Education Units at the next Advances Conference, titled “The Role of Chronic Disease Self-Management Programs in Keeping Seniors Healthy and Safe.” The one-day seminar will focus on the scope and necessity of chronic disease management, the efficacy of evidence-based self-management programs, best-practice community programs, the intricacies of multiple medications self-management, and new strategies for preventing and identifying abuse and financial exploitation in vulnerable elders.

The seminar will be held on Tuesday, June 26 at 8 a.m. at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Airport, 1870 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale. The program is open to the public, and discounted registration fees are available for UM, VA, and Jackson Health System faculty and staff.
