Martin Casuso’s Master of Fine Arts exhibition “of-things-being-what-they-are-not” is on view through June 22 at the University of Miami Gallery at the Wynwood Building, 2750 NW Third Avenue, Suite 4. An opening reception will be held Saturday, June 9 from 2 to 9 p.m.
Casuso’s work has its origins in mainstream handiwork and hobby, with a deliberate shift from a traditional application of these crafts. His work involves an ongoing exploration of how gender, sexual preference, materials, and processes relate to themes of domesticity. The materials of craft, sometimes made by unseen hands of the past or by the artist himself, are combined with a more industrial palette of hardware supplies or thrift store housewares to make new “old” objects that are not gender specific. They in turn reflect Casuso’s own relationship with domesticity, shifting from being objects of use to objects of contemplation.

“Fille is a treasure,” says Monica Mason, director of The Royal Ballet. Anyone who has seen this sunniest of ballets will certainly agree. Frederick Ashton brought the work into the 20th century and created an instant classic, which has never left The Royal Ballet’s repertory. The simple story of Lise, her suitor Colas, and Lise’s larger-than-life mother, the Widow Simone, who tries to marry her off to the simpleton son of a rich neighbor, is full of both delicious comedy and wonderful choreography. Funny and touching, La Fille Mal Gardee is the perfect ballet for first-timers of all ages; it is also one to which ballet-lovers will return again and again, with renewed pleasure at every performance.
The film screens Sunday, June 10 at noon and Tuesday, June 12 at 7 p.m. General admission is $15. Free for UM students. To purchase tickets online or for more information, visit www.cosfordcinema.com or call 305-284-4861.

Winner of the Jury Prize at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and nominated for 13 César Awards, Polisse follows the daily lives of a tight-knit team of men and women working in the Child Protection Unit of the Parisian police. Basing her richly textured script on real child investigation cases, writer-director-actor Maïwenn has gathered an accomplished ensemble cast of French actors who convey the emotional strain of the unit’s work with gritty realism as they deal with not only the stress of their jobs but the inevitable fallout in their personal lives. In between, there are frequent flashes of humor as the team attempts to defuse daily realities. As the cases, confessions, and interrogations pile up, the squad members have only each other as support as they face an uphill battle against both criminals and bureaucracy.
In French with English subtitles, the film screens Friday, June 8 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, June 9 at 4:45 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.; and Sunday, June 10 at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. General admission is $9. Admission is $7 for seniors, University of Miami alumni, faculty, non-UM students, and staff. Free for UM students. Winner of the Cannes Film Festival’s “Un Certain Regard” Special Jury Prize, Elena is a gripping, modern twist on the classic noir thriller. Sixtyish spouses Vladimir and Elena uneasily share his palatial Moscow apartment — he’s a still-virile, wealthy businessman; she’s his dowdy former nurse who has clearly “married up.” Estranged from his own wild-child daughter, Vladimir openly despises his wife’s freeloading son and family. But when a sudden illness and an unexpected reunion threaten the dutiful housewife’s potential inheritance, she must hatch a desperate plan. This film is in Russian with English subtitles.
