The Office of Civic and Community Engagement will host a lecture by Erick Lyle, author of the book, Streetopia, at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 31 in the College of Arts and  Sciences Gallery.

A journalist, activist, musician, and independent curator, Lyle will discuss the anti-gentrification art fair that featured public performances on the streets and in community gardens, new murals, historical walking tours, free daily talks, events, and skillshares throughout San Francisco in 2012.

Streetopia also featured The Free Cafe, a community kitchen Tenderloin residents operated out of a gallery to  serve two meals a day for the entire five-week run of the exhibition.

Lyle’s book looks at the experiments and art of Streetopia and the effectiveness of the public show’s projects while placing them in the context of rampant gentrification around the world and in the era of Art Basel.

This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. RSVP through Eventbrite.
