The Flames of Paris belongs neither to the pearls of the pure classics of classical dance nor to the works of the Soviet period, which were subjected to uncalled for attacks at the hands of the powers that be. Though this ballet did not disappear without a trace, the greater part of it has been lost. Produced in the 1930s in Leningrad at what was then the Kirov Theatre and soon transferred to the Bolshoi, it was to become one of Stalin’s favorite choreographies. The Flames of Paris was presented on the eve of the anniversary of the October Revolution, and later continued to be included in the ranks of works that were always brought out for an airing on anniversaries of this sort. This classic ballet has been restored and reinterpreted by the Bolshoi Ballet for this magnificent new production. The film screens on Saturday, December 18 at 3 p.m. and Sunday, December 19 at 1 p.m. Tickets are $15 general admission and $12 for seniors, UM employees, UM alumni, and non-UM students. Free for UM students. For more information, visit www.cosfordcinema.com or call 305-284-4861.
