ICCAS to Host Lessons of the Bay of Pigs

The Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies will present the panel discussion “Lessons of the Bay of Pigs” on Tuesday, April 17 at 7 p.m. at Casa Bacardi, 1531 Brescia Avenue, on the Coral Gables campus. The cost is $10, with proceeds supporting ICCAS and its programming. The event is free for UM faculty, staff, and students.

Brian Latell, senior research associate, and Pedro Roig, senior consultant, both of the Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies (ICCAS), will serve as panelists.

Latell was the CIA’s national intelligence officer for Latin America from 1990 to 1994. Before retiring from the CIA in 1998, he was the director of the Center for the Study of Intelligence. He is the author of After Fidel: The Inside Story of Castro’s Regime and Cuba’s Next Leader (Palgrave Macmillan, 2005) and the forthcoming Castro’s Secrets.

Roig has taught Cuban history courses at many institutions. He is the former director of the Office of Cuba Broadcasting – Radio & TV Marti. He has been an active member of the Florida Bar for several years. He is the author of The Death of a Dream: A History of Cuba and Marti: The Cuban Struggle for Freedom  and a veteran of Brigade 2506.

Jose Azel, senior research associate at ICCAS and author of Mañana in Cuba, will moderate the panel.

School of Law Panel: When Diplomacy Fails: The Syria Dilemma

A group of University of Miami School of Law student organizations will host a panel discussion, “When Diplomacy Fails: The Syria Dilemma,” on Tuesday, April 17 from 12:30 to 1:50 p.m. at the School of Law, Room F309. Participating student groups include the International Law Society, Muslim Law Students Association, National Security and Armed Conflict Law Review, Criminal Law Society, Military Law Society, and Student Organization for Human Rights.

Markus Wagner, professor of international law at UM, will moderate the discussion. Panelists will include Doured Daghistani, community organizer with the Syrian American Council; Juan Larrain, professor of international studies at the University of Miami, former Chilean ambassador to the United Nations, and a former advisor to the UN Security Council; and Bradford McGuinn, lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of Miami, advisor to the U.S. armed forces, and frequent lecturer at the United States Department of Defense.

Twenty-Six International Conference on Screening for Lung Cancer

The Miller School of Medicine will co-host the 26th International Conference on Screening for Lung Cancer on Monday, April 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Tuesday, April 17 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Lois Pope LIFE Center, seventh-floor auditorium. The conference will focus on lung cancer screening for high-risk individuals who have a history of smoking. It will also review screening for non-smoking individuals who have been exposed to secondhand smoke and are at risk for developing lung cancer and other diseases.

Stress Management Open Forum

Enhance your ability to manage stress at this lunchtime seminar, offered by the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP). Reviewing common stressors and how they can be managed, the forum will draw upon the collective knowledge of participants as well as the facilitator’s expertise to troubleshoot and generate practical solutions. FSAP Health and Wellness Seminars are offered as part of the University of Miami’s Well ’Canes Program.

Miller School of Medicine campus: Tuesday, April 17 from 12 to 1 p.m. at University of Miami Hospital, Seminar Center C.

Coral Gables campus: Wednesday, April 18 from 12 to 1 p.m. at the University Center, Room 245.
