Steven Falcone named associate VP for medical affairs and COO of UM Medical Group

In his new position, Steven Falcone will spearhead strategic planning efforts for University of Miami Medical Group.

Steven Falcone, associate professor of radiology, neurological surgery, and ophthalmology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, has been named associate vice president for medical affairs, chief operating officer for the University of Miami Medical Group (UMMG), and associate executive dean for practice development. Falcone was previously executive clinical dean for the Regional Campus of the Miller School in Boca Raton.

In his new position, Falcone will spearhead the strategic planning effort focused on the growth of UMMG, the Miller School’s faculty practice, composed of more than 1,000 physicians. He will also play a key role in the implementation of the electronic medical record system UChart and the establishment of a central billing office for UHealth-University of Miami Health System.

“In my new position, providing patient-centric care will be the primary principle that drives all of our operational decisions,” Falcone said. “The patient will always come first, and improving the patient experience will be our top priority, especially when it comes to the access and coordination of care between our primary and specialty care physicians.”

Falcone is an avid UM Hurricane. He received his undergraduate, medical, and MBA degrees from the University. He also did his residency in radiology and his fellowship in neuroradiology at UM/Jackson, and joined the UM faculty in 1992.

As a clinical neuroradiologist, Falcone has a particular interest in spinal imaging. He and his co-investigators have published many papers, including a groundbreaking article describing the MRI and intra-operative ultrasound findings on spinal cord injured quadriplegic patients, and on spinal cord cysts formation.

“Steve Falcone has a keen understanding of the best way to develop and operate our faculty practice, the largest in South Florida, which will be of critical importance as we continue to expand UHealth,” said Pascal J. Goldschmidt, senior vice president for medical affairs and dean of the Miller School and CEO of UHealth. “Dr. Falcone recently oversaw the tremendous growth in our clinical practice across Palm Beach County and has been instrumental in implementing the first third-year medical school class in Palm Beach County at JFK Medical Center, Bethesda Memorial Hospital, and South County Mental Health Facility. He will bring the same dedication and commitment to overseeing the entire UHealth clinical enterprise.”

For Falcone, the new position comes down to providing only the highest quality of care: “We must make sure the patient experience is the best it can be, and that we are practicing evidence-based medicine in a way that we will achieve the best possible outcomes for those who entrust us with their care.”
