The latest film from master documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman. The subject of the film is an Austin, Texas institution, Lord’s Gym, which was founded 16 years ago by Richard Lord, a former professional boxer. A wide variety of people of all ages, races, ethnicities and social classes train at the gym: men, women, children, doctors, lawyers, judges, business men and women, immigrants, professional boxers and people who want to become professional boxers alongside amateurs who love the sport and teenagers who are trying to develop strength and assertiveness. The gym is an example of the American “melting pot” where people meet, talk, and train. On a winding mountain road, Vittorio (Sergio Castellitto) gallantly helps Kate (Jane Birkin) with her stalled car, and without a single word exchanged, speeds off. Later in town, he learns that Kate has returned to join her family’s traveling circus after leaving under mysterious conditions many years ago. Intrigued by her story, Vittorio stays for the show, and the next one, and little by little, is ingratiated into the circus and the lives of its performers – all the while trying to discover the secret that led to Kate’s sudden departure. The 60th Annual Beaux Arts Festival of Art will bring 240 fine artists to the grounds of the Lowe Art Museum on the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus from Saturday to Sunday, January 8 to 9, 2011, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Recognized as one of the top-rated outdoor exhibits of museum-quality fine art, the festival attracts thousands of people annually, offering works in ten mediums for a variety of budgets. This year, artists hail from 30 states plus Canada and Israel.

Admission and parking are free, and proceeds benefit the Lowe Art Museum, which will be open to the public all weekend.

A signature event on the South Florida cultural circuit, the Beaux Arts Festival of Art offers visitors the opportunity to meet exhibiting artists, sample fine cuisine, and enjoy live entertainment. Kids can enjoy the family zone, with special entertainment and a Children’s Art Activity Area, where kids 4 to 12 can make arts and crafts for free.

In honor of the 60th anniversary, the festival will launch a children’s coloring book featuring important works from the Lowe’s world collections. For example, gracing the cover of Color the Lowe Art Museum is a work by renowned American minimalist painter and sculptor Frank Stella. Children who attend the festival will receive a copy of the book to color, as will the 500 kids who visit the Lowe each year, thanks to festival organizer and volunteer group Beaux Arts.

“Like the festival, the coloring book is one more way to draw attention to the Lowe’s cultural importance to this community,” said Morgan Smith, Beaux Arts president.

The festival was originally called the Clothesline Sale, as Beaux Arts volunteers used clotheslines to display the works of local artists in front of the Lowe. Nearly six decades later, the festival has evolved and is considered one of the top outdoor fine art shows in the nation.

Sponsors for the 60th anniversary festival include Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables and Mercedes-Benz of Cutler Bay, Holtz Children’s Hospital, Lowell International Realty, Tony and Sandy Tamer, Bank of New York Mellon, Sabadell United Bank, and the Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs.

The festival also presents the annual Student Artist Showcase, featuring more than 300 pieces from Miami-Dade middle and high school students on display inside the Lowe. A portrait by Best in Show Winner Fernando Ramos, an 11th grader from the Academy of Arts & Minds Charter School, graces the festival’s poster. A celebration honoring the student art will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, January 6 at the Lowe.

The Department of Art and Art History in UM’s College of Arts and Sciences will present a solo exhibition by Ralph Provisero. Trinacria will be on view at UM’s Wynwood Project Space, 2200-A NW 2nd Avenue, Miami, from January 8-22, 2011. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2011 from 6 to 10 p.m.

The exhibition features three large-scale works with drawings and models. Using the patches in damaged welding curtains from the school as drawings, Provisero references time and memory, reality and the past. Distilled from these concepts are the models and large-scale works in the exhibit. They represent the formal counterpart, the spatial experience, and the present. Together these nine works unite as an installation of concept and form.

Provisero’s works have been exhibited both nationally and internationally at such venues as the Martin Z. Margulies Collection, the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Ateneo de Yucatan, the Bass Museum, and Chicago’s Navy Pier. Part of the Lowe Art Museum’s permanent collection, Provisero’s large-scale work “Pietra Veloce” resides on the UM campus.

Wynwood Project Space is open from 6 to 10 p.m. every second Saturday of the month and by appointment. Admission is free.
