Haiti: One Year After the Earthquake

The College of Arts and Sciences and the Center for the Humanities will present the UM faculty panel discussion “Haiti: One Year After the Earthquake” on Wednesday, January 26 at 4:30 at the CAS Gallery on the Coral Gables campus, 1210 Stanford Drive. Panelists will discuss the impact of the 2010 earthquake and the local, national, and international efforts launched to support Haiti in the past year, as well as what can be done to help in the future.

UM panelists will include Ariel Armony, Weeks Professor in Latin American Studies, professor of international studies, and director of the Center for Latin American Studies; Sanjeev Chatterjee, executive director of the Knight Center for International Media, professor of electronic media, broadcast journalism and media management, and vice dean of the School of Communication; Louis Herns Marcelin, assistant professor of anthropology; MarieGuerda Nicolas, associate professor of educational and psychological studies at the School of Education; and Kate Ramsey, assistant professor of history. The event is free and open to the public.

Harrington Visiting Professor at the Miller School of Medicine, will present “Medicine in the 21st Century: Challenges and Opportunities” on Wednesday, January 26 at 12 p.m. in the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building, third-floor auditorium. Sponsored Programs Education Workshop

The Sponsored Programs Education Workshop is a required institutional program for all key personnel listed on proposals. The next workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, January 26 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the Miller School of Medicine campus, Dominion Towers, 12th-floor conference room.

The goal is to educate key personnel and administrators with the fiscal and compliance issues of pre- and post-award management. The workshop covers the most recent information on the grant process, from finding funding opportunities to closing an account. The workshop will review the principal investigator’s role and responsibility for administering sponsored projects, explain established policies and procedures, and provide an overview of the central support services available to the investigator. The class will focus primarily on federal sponsors.
