The integrity of scholarship and the scientific record requires that scholars and researchers uphold the highest scientific and ethical standards. Current policy and practice at the University of Miami reflect a shared commitment that the design, conduct, and reporting of scholarly activity and research will not be biased. As relationships between academic institutions and private industries become increasingly complex, the University must continually reassess the manner in which it assures that scholarly activity and research at UM are unbiased.

The Office of Research Compliance is sponsoring a series of seminars on conflicts of interest (COI) in research. The objectives of the fall sessions are to:

• Provide a refresher on the UM COI policy for sponsored research and the UM process for identifying potential COI in sponsored research;

• Review regulations proposed by the National Institutes of Health; and

• Gather feedback from the research community.

Faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to attend one of the following seminars:

• August 18: 10-11 a.m., Dominion Towers, 12th-floor conference room (Miller School of Medicine campus)

• September 7: 2-3 p.m., Clinical Research Building, Room 989 (Miller School of Medicine campus).

• September 17: 2 -3 p.m., Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science auditorium (Virginia Key campus)

• September 29: 1- 2 p.m., Flipse Building, Room 502 (Coral Gables campus)
