Ethics Grand Rounds: Lies, Truth, and Their Consequences: Consolation for the Perplexed Professional

The UM Ethics Programs will host grand rounds in collaboration with University of Miami Hospitals and Clinics, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and the Miami VA Medical Center on Wednesday, February 8 at 10 a.m. at Jackson Memorial Hospital, second-floor central auditorium. Panagiota V. Caralis, professor of medicine at the Miller School of Medicine and integrated ethics program officer at the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center, will present “Lies, Truth, and Their Consequences: Consolation for the Perplexed Professional.”

From the disclosure of medical errors to the nuances of the informed consent process, few issues present as many difficulties and hurdles as the role of truth-telling in clinical contexts. Indeed, successful responses to the challenges associated with clinical veracity are among the signposts of medical professionalism.

Season of Hoops Continues; Women’s and Men’s Squads Face Key Opponents

The University of Miami women’s and men’s basketball seasons continue this week with two Exciting matchups at BankUnited Center. On Wednesday, February 8 at 7 p.m., the women’s team will take on the North Carolina Tar Heels. Led by senior standout players Shenise Johnson and Riquna Williams, the ’Canes are ranked seventh in the nation in both the Associated Press and ESPN coaches poll. Last year, the squad won the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) regular-season championship and reached the NCAA Tournament, and hopes to repeat their success this year.

The men’s team, led by first-year Head Coach Jim Larranaga, takes on the Virginia Tech Hokies on Thursday, February 9 at 9 p. m. The men’s squad started the season with five straight victories and recently posted key ACC wins over Clemson, Georgia Tech, Boston College, and Maryland.

Diabetes and You Q&A Session
