After years of conducting successful, randomized drug abuse treatment clinical trials for Spanish speakers and general populations in Florida and the nation, researchers from the Miller School’s Department of Epidemiology and Public Health are exporting their expertise to Mexico.
Armed with a two-year $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of State, they are training researchers at Mexico’s Ramón de la Fuente National Institute of Psychiatry to conduct randomized clinical trials in Mexico with the same rigor used in the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse’s National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network (NIDA-CTN). The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health will host Grand Rounds on Wednesday, May 18 from 12 to 1 p.m. at the Gordon Center’s Broad-Bussel Auditorium, located on the first floor of the Clinical Research Building on the Miller School of Medicine campus. Carolyn M. Clancy, director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in the Department of Health and Human Services, will discuss: the national initiative to improve heath care quality and transform health services delivery through research; the role of comparative effectiveness research as a tool for improving health care quality and cost benefits; the newly approved Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute; and issues ranging from implementation and dissemination of evidence-based approaches required to improve quality of care to the importance of collaboration in advancing the science of health care delivery and public health. The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health will host an open house on Wednesday, April 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Clinical Research Building, Room 665.
