Three Rwandan children sneak onto a bus and set off for Rwanda’s capital city, Kigali, to audition for the opening ceremony of the 2010 World Cup, but it’s the wrong bus and they end up in the Congo. Lost in a dangerous country without papers, money, or a believable story, they are taken to a children’s refugee camp, where they meet the mysterious teenager Foreman George. They decide to head straight to Johannesburg, South Africa, for the opening ceremony; en route, they are joined by escaped sex worker Celeste. Armed with ingenuity, determination, and blind optimism, the group travels some 3,000 miles through Rwanda, Congo, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Their travels reveal a side of Africa few people ever see. Africa United is a story of joy, laughter, hope, and generosity—the ‘ubuntu’ spirit in which the children make this incredible journey. This film is part of the “From Britain With Love” series that is running at the Bill Cosford Cinema through July 24. TJ is a mad bastard, and his estranged 13-year-old son, Bullet, is on the fast track to becoming one, too. After being turned away from his mother’s house, TJ sets off across the country to the Kimberly region of northwestern Australia to make things right with his son. Grandpa Tex has lived a tough life and now, as a local cop, he wants to change things for the men in his community. Crosscutting among three generations, Mad Bastards is a raw look at the transformational journey to becoming a man. Developed with Aboriginal communities and featuring a local cast, Mad Bastards draws on the rich storytelling traditions of indigenous life. Using music from legendary Broome musicians the Pigram Brothers, the film poetically fuses the themes of violence, healing, and family. The film will screen on Friday, July 1 at 9 p.m.; Saturday, July 2 at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, July 3 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Admission is $7 for seniors, University of Miami alumni, faculty, non UM-students, and staff. General admission is $9. Free for UM students. To purchase tickets online or for more information, visit www.cosfordcinema.com or call 305-284-4861.
