Biology Departmental Lecture: Genetic Control of Mitochondrial Morphogenesis during Drosophila Spermatogenisis

Feb
6
12:20 pm

Karen Hales, associate professor in the Department of Biology at Davidson College, will present “Genetic Control of Mitochondrial Morphogenesis during Drosophila Spermatogenisis” on Monday, February 6 at 12:20 p.m. in the Cox Science Center, Room 166. Hales performs genetic analysis with the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster to explore the molecular mechanisms by which mitochondria are moved and shaped in cells. In Drosophila melanogaster (as in most other higher organisms), mitochondria undergo a dramatic series of shape changes during spermatogenesis. Through the analysis of male-sterile mutants defective in mitochondrial morphogenesis, Hales’ lab isolates and characterizes genes whose protein products function in this process.

For more information about this lecture, please contact Julia Dallman at [email protected].
