Joshua M. Hare, Louis Lemberg Professor of Medicine and director of the Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute.

The Miller School of Medicine’s Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute (ISCI) announced that it received a $10 million grant from The Starr Foundation, one of the largest private foundations in the United States. The grant will support ISCI in broadening its preclinical and clinical research on stem cells, and help accelerate its pipeline of translational research and programs for a wide range of debilitating conditions including cardiac disease, cancer, wound healing, stroke, glaucoma, and chronic kidney and gastrointestinal diseases.

“This is a momentous and transformative gift for the Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute,” said Joshua M. Hare, Louis Lemberg Professor of Medicine and director of ISCI. “We are so gratified that the level of science being conducted here was recognized by this very generous grant from The Starr Foundation. With this award, we join the ranks of the other major top-tier universities funded by The Starr Foundation. This support, along with our growing NIH funding, technology transfer, and other philanthropic efforts, guarantees the stability of ISCI through the end of the decade and will allow us to continue to push the boundaries of regenerative medicine with the goal of improving human health.” Read the full story

UM to Survey Employees on Parking Usage on Coral Gables Campus

University of Miami employees will soon receive a four-question, online survey on their parking usage on the Coral Gables campus. The survey will be sent via email and should take less than two minutes to complete. Faculty and staff are encouraged to take the time to complete the survey, which will help the University determine the rate of parking use and do a better job of meeting future campus parking needs.

With parking often a topic of discussion on any college campus, the UM’s Campus Planning and Parking and Transportation Services departments have been working closely with traffic and parking consultants to update parking and traffic plans for the Coral Gables campus. The effort includes analyzing parking patterns for faculty, staff, and commuter and resident students to determine the usage rate of on-campus parking resources.

The survey and collaborative efforts are part of UM’s commitment to improve on-campus parking. Last fall, in a move to make it easier for motorists to find spaces and reduce the effects of traffic on surrounding neighborhood streets, a new plan was implemented that divides parking areas into zones, with the sale of permits for each zone matched to the capacity for that area.
