Cosford Cinema Screening: The Fairy

It is now a rarity for contemporary movies to be compared with the comic brilliance of Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, and Jacques Tati, but The Fairy earns these comparisons with grace and exuberance. A Belgian trio – Dominique Abel, Fiona Gordon, and Bruno Romy – bring to life a unique and beautifully strange world. This charmingly off-kilter adventure about a hotel clerk who falls in love with a wish-granting fairy has delighted audiences. Considered the sibling of last year’s Oscar winner, The Artist, The Fairy celebrates the nearly forgotten magic of cinema.

Dom works the night shift in a small hotel near the industrial seaport of Le Havre. One night, a woman arrives with no luggage and no shoes. Her name is Fiona, and she tells Dom that she is a fairy who can grant him three wishes. Fiona makes two of his wishes come true; when she then mysteriously disappears, Dom, who has fallen in love, begins his quest to find her.

Shown in French with English subtitles, the film screens Friday, May 18 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, May 19 at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, May 20 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Admission is $7 for seniors, University of Miami alumni, faculty, non-UM students, and staff. General admission is $9. Free for UM students. To purchase tickets online or for more information, visit www.cosfordcinema.com or call 305-284-4861.
