Remembering Paul Dee

Paul Dee was instrumental in helping UM build an on-campus basketball arena.

Miami Herald sports reporter Michelle Kaufman recalled the story as if it were only yesterday. It was the year 2000, and with rumors swirling that then-University of Miami basketball coach Leonard Hamilton was about to sign with the NBA’s Washington Wizards, Kaufman waited anxiously in front of UM’s Hecht Athletic Center to get a comment from Paul Dee, believing the athletic director was inside the building because his car was parked outside.

An hour passed. Then two. Then three. But no Paul Dee.

“At about 9 o’clock, a car pulls up, and Paul gets out of the passenger seat carrying a doggy bag from Ruth’s Chris Steak House,” Kaufman said. Read the full story

American Institute of Architects to Hold Monthly Meeting at UM

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) will conduct its monthly meeting and reception at the University of Miami’s Jorge M. Perez Architecture Center, Glasgow Hall, on Tuesday, May 22 at 7 p.m. A reception begins at 6 p.m. UM President Donna E. Shalala is scheduled to speak. President Shalala to Participate in ‘Jobs One’ Panel Discussion

On Monday, May 21, University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala and U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis will join some of Florida’s top business and civic leaders for a special event focusing on the region’s workforce, the skills gap, and the future of the economy.

Hosted by NBC News, NBC 6, Telemundo network, Telemundo 51, and partners, “Job One: Preparing America to Compete in the 21st Century” will be held at the New World Center in Miami Beach at 7:30 p.m. The event is by invitation only. It will air live for public viewing on “The Wall” at New World Center. NBC 6 will air the event on Saturday, May 26 from 1 to 2 p.m. The “Job One” event is sponsored by University of Phoenix.

“Job One” is part of NBC News’ “Education Nation Miami,” which also includes education-focused programming on NBC News, NBC 6, Telemundo network, and Telemundo 51.

For the tour, NBC News is enlisting the support of several of its “Education Nation” sponsors and partners, including University of Phoenix, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Helios Education Foundation, and knowledge partners including Miami Dade College and NBC Learn.

Miller School’s BikeSafe Program Promotes National Bike to School Day

In honor of National Bike Month this May, the University of Miami’s BikeSafe team joined hundreds of students, parents, teachers, local police, and Miami Dolphins mascot T.D. at Hialeah Gardens Middle School for the first National Bike to School Day on May 9.

Under the direction of Gillian Hotz, research professor of neurological surgery and director of the KiDZ Neuroscience Center at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, the BikeSafe program is promoting policies and initiatives to make it easier for people of all ages and abilities to bike safely in their communities. Board of Trustees Appoints New Members

Joseph J. “Joe” Echevarría Jr., CEO of Deloitte LLP, has been named to UM's Board of Trustees.

Joseph J. “Joe” Echevarría Jr., chief executive officer of Deloitte LLP and an alumnus of the University of Miami’s School of Business Administration, has been named to UM’s Board of Trustees.

After graduating from the School of Business Administration in 1978, Echevarría joined Deloitte, the largest professional services organization in the U.S., and rose quickly within the firm, being named an audit partner in 1988. Since then, he has held many leadership positions within Deloitte, including U.S. managing partner of operations, vice chair, U.S. deputy managing partner, and audit partner in charge of South Florida.
