Another Harvest Moon is a sensitive drama about four elderly Americans coping with life in a nursing home. Frank (Ernest Borgnine), Ella (Anne Meara), Alice (Doris Roberts), and June (Piper Laurie) gather each morning for a game of cards. They have become like family to one another, offering unyielding support, constant bickering, and strong opinions about life, death, and everything in between. One morning Frank reveals to Ella that he no longer remembers his wife’s face and that he doesn’t want to live to endure another debilitating stroke. He persuades his son Jeffrey (Richard Schiff) to give him his old gun because by holding it he finds a way to remember his World War II buddies. But perhaps he has another motive for wanting the weapon. His friends and family must confront their own feelings about faith, dignity, and our obligations to our loved ones. Another Harvest Moon deals with issues affecting us all.

The Miami Civic Music Association will present the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra, conducted by Scott Flavin with Frost School Dean Shelly Berg, on Sunday, April 3 at 4 p.m. at Gusman Concert Hall on the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus. This unique musical group, composed of advanced students from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, will present a diverse and exciting concert that will include works by Berg, the world premiere of Steve Guerra’s Mancini Medley, a tribute to composer/conductor John Williams, and music from “Charlie Parker with Strings,” based on Parker’s award-winning recordings and featuring saxophonist Matt Vashlishan.

The orchestra is known for its ability to play in a wide variety of styles, including jazz, pop, crossover, and classical. The group performs regularly with some of today’s top musical artists and recently appeared on PBS TV with the renowned composer/arranger/pianist Dave Grusin, who wrote the music for the great Mike Nichols film The Graduate, and on an HBO TV special featuring comic artist Robert Klein. They performed the world premiere of the musical Lanza!, based on the life of the famous American tenor Mario Lanza, which was produced by legendary music producer Phil Ramone. In addition to their scheduled performances, they present numerous community outreach concerts in the Greater Miami area.

Berg has performed, recorded, and arranged music for many of the world’s most well-known jazz vocalists, including Patti Austin, Nancy Wilson, and Bobby McFerrin. He maintains a busy schedule of jazz festival and club performances around the world with such jazz luminaries as Ray Brown, Louie Bellson, Jon Faddis, and Arturo Sandoval. He is a prolific composer and recording artist as well.

All UM faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend the concert. The Miami Civic Music Association is offering a special discount to all members of the UM community. General Admission $25. UM students and children $5. Discount tickets will be available at the Gusman Concert Hall box office one hour before the performance on Sunday, April 3.
