Florida Bar Swearing-In Ceremony

Join the School of Law on Tuesday, April 12 for the Florida Bar Swearing-In Ceremony, celebrating the admission of UM law graduates into the Florida Bar. Juan Ramirez Jr., chief justice of the Third District Court of Appeal, will preside. The ceremony begins at 4:30 p.m. in the law school’s second-floor Reading Room (D201). Department of Philosophy Lecture: Complexity Theory in Cuba: The History of a Difference

The Department of Philosophy presents Antonio Correa Iglesias, professor of philosophy and chair of the Catedra para el Estudio de la Complejidad (Complexity Studies) at the Universidad de las Artes, University of Havana, Cuba. Iglesias will speak on “Complexity Theory in Cuba: The History of a Difference” on Tuesday, April 12, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the University Center, Room 245. Iglesias started out in aesthetics but has recently veered toward epistemology and cognitive science. He is interested in the notion of the mind as a distributed (complex dynamical) attractor of the brain. His talk at UM will address the introduction of and explosion of interest in complexity theory in Cuba and the social and philosophical implications thereof. Tunnel to Shed Light on Oppression

The Tunnel of Oppression, an exhibition that challenges people’s thoughts and perceptions surrounding different social injustices, will run April 11-13 from 4 to 9 p.m. in the University Center Ballrooms. It is free and open to the public. The exhibition includes a series of rooms that raise awareness about acts of oppression through interactive skits, various multimedia, and role-playing that serve as a sensory overload to bring students out of their comfort zone and present daily oppressive circumstances as well as oppression in global society. The Tunnel of Oppression 2011 will address tools of oppression, racism, political oppression, education, religion, mental/physical disabilities, gender and body image issues, classism, LGBTQ issues, domestic violence, and sexual assault.

The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) offers this 30-minute training session for those interested in building their capacity to consciously activate their body’s parasympathetic response. The parasympathetic (or relaxation) response is at the heart of all stress management techniques. Its use is directly correlated with the promotion of optimal health. Take a break from your busy workweek to practice techniques that promote health through relaxation. A University of Miami FSAP employee assistance professional will facilitate the training. FSAP health and wellness seminars are offered as part of the University of Miami’s Well ’Canes Program.

Coral Gables campus: Tuesday, April 12, from 12 to 12:30 p.m. at the University Center, Room 241.

Rosenstiel School campus: Wednesday, April 13, from 12 to 12:30 p.m. in the library’s rare book room.

Miller School campus: Thursday, April 14, from 12 to 12:30 p.m. in the Dominion Parking Garage, Room 155.
